The Canary Islands Surfing Federation has invited local and international athletes to compete from September 24 to 28 at the iconic beach in northern Tenerife
This sporting event will count toward two additional competitions, with support from the Los Realejos City Council, the Tenerife Island Council, and the Canary Islands Government
The Canary Islands Surfing Federation is once again organizing a European Tour of BodyBoard (ETB) event this year, from September 24 to 28, at El Socorro Beach in Los Realejos. The competition is held under the brand Socorro Classic, created last year to promote the federation’s sporting activities at this beach in northern Tenerife.
“In this way, we continue the project we started in 2024: to bring El Socorro back to the international circuit after more than a decade of absence and to highlight the value of the waves at this northern Tenerife beach,” said Ángel Lobo, president of the Canary Islands Surfing Federation.
This is an official event that earns points toward the European Tour of BodyBoard, the 100% Bodyboard League (organized by the Spanish Surfing Federation), and the Canary Islands Bodyboard Circuit (by the local federation).
This year, the ETB 2025 event in Tenerife will take place a few days before another leg of the same circuit in Las Palmas, as the Canary Islands Surfing Federation aims to “create a mirrored initiative that allows athletes visiting the archipelago to participate in both events with a single trip, complemented by inter-island travel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria,” added Lobo.
The president also emphasized that this kind of setup “helps reduce the carbon footprint and promotes the Canary Islands as a sustainable and conscious sports tourism destination, maintaining a respectful and balanced relationship between sport and nature, one of the guiding principles of our discipline and event organization.”
Participation & Registration
The competition is open to athletes from around the world, who are invited to compete in the Open, Women, Junior, and Dropknee categories.
Those interested can register online through the sign-up portal at: http://www.socorroclassic.com/.
To participate in ETB 2025 El Socorro, athletes must hold a valid national, European, or international federation license, or one recognized by the International Surfing Association (ISA).
Participants may register in as many categories as they wish. Once brackets are full, registrations will close immediately. There is a limit of 120 total spots for the entire event, although the organizing federation reserves the right to increase this number.
The competition will follow a heat-based system, with four athletes per heat. The top two advance to the next round. Each heat will last approximately 20 to 45 minutes, depending on staff decisions. A total of €6,000 in prize money will be distributed across all categories. Except for the Junior category (for athletes under 18 as of December 31, 2024), all other categories are open to participants of all ages. Apart from the dropknee discipline – where riders surf with one knee on the board – all other categories are in the prone bodyboarding style (lying on the board).
El Socorro is a traditional hotspot for surfing and bodyboarding in the Canary Islands. Its openness to the North Atlantic and exposure to swells from the west, north, and east make this beach in Tenerife a privileged sports arena.
ETB 2025 El Socorro is envisioned as a live sporting spectacle, complemented by cultural and recreational activities, with a full program to be announced closer to the event.
The event is organized by the Canary Islands Surfing Federation – with support from the European Surfing Federation and the Spanish Surfing Federation – and is backed by the Los Realejos City Council, sponsored by the Tenerife Island Council through its public company Ideco, and supported by the Canary Islands Government's General Directorate of Physical Activity and Sports, along with various private sponsors.
