Tomorrow we shall have the last and decisive day of the Eurosurf 2023.
Today, Spain has gained significant advantage, after eliminating two more Portuguese surfers (Gabriela Dinis and Guilherme Fonseca) and having placed four more riders in finals (Luis Diaz, Annette Gonzalez-Etxabarri, Lucia Machado, Carlota Jauregui) and another one, Leticia Bilbao, in the repechage final of the women’s surf division. Not forgetting José Luis Berasaluce still in the Longboard repechage.
Besides this duel that will, most probably, decide the 2023 European Champion, the first highlight of the day came through English longboarder Ben Skinner who scored a 16.44 total on his way to the medals final that will take place tomorrow, making a strong bid for another European longboard title.
The battle for the European title between Spain and Portugal had its more decisive moments coming in the women’s surf competition, when Annette Gonzalez-Etxabarri and Lucia Machado dominated their qualification final relegating Portugal’s Mafalda Lopes to the repechage and dealing a late, but probably deadly, blow in round 7 of the repechage, when Leticia Bilbao managed to squeeze through to the repechage final of tomorrow with Israel’s Noa Lelior and leaving behind Portuguese Gabriela Dinis and last German standing, Rachel Presti (earlier in the day, Lenni Jensen also lost in repechage 6 of men’s surfing).
So, we reach the day of all decisions, with Spain with a definite advantage but with some more individual heroics to be seen and applauded. Either way, European surfing history will be written, once again, in Santa Cruz.
The Eurosurf returns tomorrow at 9h00 GMT and all the live action and results are available here at www.eurosurfing.org
